Sauble Beach epitomizes summer fun in Ontario, where the winters are long and the locals know how to enjoy themselves when the weather is good. This beach is very long, great for a vigorous walk if exercise is what you go to the beach for, and it’s a blend of elements, from a laid-back sunbathing venue to a lively party atmosphere.
There are natural dunes at this beach, swept into place by the westerly winds; sand here is classed as “sugar”, which is excellent for sculptures and accordingly there is an annual contest for building sandcastles. Sauble Beach and surrounds is an outdoor paradise.
There are lots of things to do in the area, with a CASCAR motor speedway, interesting shops, a few golf courses, and hiking on the stunningly beautiful Bruce Trail. On the beach there is swimming, windsurfing, tubing (more of that on the local river) and banana boat rides. Sauble Beach hosts the annual Festival of Classical Guitar, lending a unique cultural element to the scene.
At nearby Sauble Falls there is camping and hiking, and you can marvel as the salmon jump up the river falls! Even in the winter there is action here with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile riding.
The activity never seems to end, except perhaps at sunset on the sand when Sauble Beach drowns in shade of reds, golds and purples. Sauble Beach is certainly one of Canada’s great treasures, and except for the lack of palm trees, it feels positively Caribbean in July and August.
